Here’s a general guide on whether to repair or replace common household appliances based on their typical lifespan and cost-effectiveness. Keep in mind these are averages and can vary depending on usage, maintenance, and quality of the appliance.

General Rule of Thumb

  • 50% Rule: If the repair cost exceeds 50% of the cost of a new appliance, replacement is often a better choice.
  • Age + Cost Formula: Consider replacement if the appliance’s age (in years) multiplied by the repair cost exceeds the price of a new unit.

Refrigerator

Typical Lifespan: 10-20 Years
Repair if: The unit is less than 8 years old and the repair cost is less than half the cost of a new fridge.
Replace if: It’s over 10 years old or has a major component failure (e.g., compressor).

Dishwasher

Typical Lifespan: 8-12 Years
Repair if: It’s less than 6 years old and the issue is minor (e.g., clogged drain, worn-out seals).
Replace if:
It’s over 8 years old or the repair cost exceeds 50% of the replacement cost.

Oven / Range (Gas or Electric)

Typical Lifespan: 10-18 Years
Repair if: The issue is minor (e.g., faulty igniter, heating element) and the appliance is under 15 years old.
Replace if:
It’s nearing the end of its lifespan or the repair cost is high.

Microwave

Typical Lifespan: 7-10 Years
Repair if: The issue is simple, like replacing a fuse or fixing the door latch.
Replace if:
It’s over 7 years old or repairs are costly.

Washing Machine

Typical Lifespan: 10-14 Years
Repair if: It’s under 8 years old and the repair is less than $500.
Replace if:
It’s over 10 years old, leaks frequently, or has motor/drum issues.

Dryer

Typical Lifespan: 10-13 Years
Repair if: It’s under 8 years old and the issue is with minor parts (e.g., belts, fuses).
Replace if:
It’s nearing 12 years or has recurring issues.

Water Heater

Typical Lifespan: 8-12 Years (Tank) / 15-20 Years (Tankless)
Repair if: The issue is with replaceable parts like the thermostat or heating element.
Replace if: It’s leaking or past its lifespan.

HVAC System (Furnace / AC)

Typical Lifespan: 15-20 Years (Furnace) / 10-15 Years (Air Conditioner)
Repair if: It’s less than 10 years old and repair costs are less than $1,000.
Replace if: It’s over 15 years old or requires major repairs like a new compressor.
